OUR HISTORY

Established on 12 August 1958, Wenty Leagues Club has grown from humble beginnings into the vibrant community hub it is today. Just a month later, on 11 September 1958, the Club proudly welcomed its first 46 Foundation Life Members. These dedicated individuals laid the groundwork for what would become an enduring institution, deeply embedded in the local community.

EARLY VISIONARIES

The founding pioneers of Wenty Leagues displayed remarkable vision and determination despite limited financial resources. To raise funds, they organised member subscriptions, raffles, beer tickets, and even “first try scorer” competitions. Furthermore, the Club secured a loan from the local Bank of New South Wales, backed by Millers Brewery, which helped it take its first steps.

In September 1959, the Club made a major leap forward by purchasing its first parcel of land, signalling the beginning of a transformative period. By July 1960, the Club had grown to 211 members and submitted its first application for a liquor licence. The Club recognised the original 46 members as the “Foundation Life Members,” thereby cementing their place in its history.

BUILDING WENTY

The journey began in 1956, when the General Committee of the Rugby League Football Club resolved to establish a Leagues Club. Initial funding was secured through Foundation Life Memberships, offered at £10 each. Thanks to early supporters like Barry Moulds, Jim Docking, and Wally Webster, the Club officially launched.

In 1962, Wenty Leagues opened its first clubhouse—a single-level building constructed at a cost of $46,000 to serve approximately 200 members. While modest compared to today’s expansive venue at the Great Western Highway/Smith Street site, it laid the foundation for a thriving community-focused Club.
